Morning Rituals to Win the Day

Everyone is looking for ways to increase their productivity, feel more confident and just feel a greater sense of happiness on an everyday basis. One of the real secrets and one of my favorites to making this all happen for you is by establishing a morning ritual. The saying is by winning the morning, you will win the day.

The first moments after you wake up can determine how your whole day will go. If you tend to wake up with feelings of stress, negativity or just plain tired, then chances are you won’t be enjoying the rest of your day. If you believe this to be how you start most of your days, you’re not alone. It is hard to believe but most people tend to start their day feeling negative. They will start their day trying to react to everything they feel they haven’t accomplished. Or that to do list is running through your head first thing! Or your first thoughts might be what you forgot to do the day before. You can feel sluggish until you get that caffeine boost from one or two (or more) cups of coffee. In order to feel a change, you need to make a decision. It is good to take a few moments when you first wake up and think positive thoughts like – What do I get to do today for the sheer joy of it? What do I have to be truly grateful for? Or what is the best thing that happened yesterday? I thought I would share with you seven simple rituals that we all can do and will help give you that energy you need for every day.

Make Time for Gratitude: I recently blogged about showing gratitude and asking yourself on a regular basis “what are you grateful for?” This one question can leave a great impression on your entire day and the earlier you ask the question, the better your day will be. Taking the time to write down and think about the things that you are grateful for can provide you with that positive attitude to help you tackle your day. How we choose to view things sets the tone. You could keep a gratitude journal on your nightstand and whether you take a moment at the end of the night or first thing in the morning to write down what you are grateful for – either way, you will feel lighter for it!

Drink Water: Keeping yourself hydrated goes a long way to taking care of your body. When you wake up, your body is dehydrated and needs water. During that first hour of waking up, try to drink good old fashioned water! Drinking water will help your body wake up and you will feel more invigorated. Who knows? You may not even need to rely on coffee anymore or not as much.

Get Up, Get Moving: Nothing will start to get the blood flowing like physical activity. Emotions are connected to how we use our bodies which makes it even more important that we use it to prepare for the day every morning. Do some stretching or yoga or go for a walk first thing in the morning to wake your body up and provide you with the energy for a more productive day. All of those types of exercise have the added benefit of being meditative too.

Feed Your Mind: What do most people read in the morning? The newspaper. Unfortunately, most of the news that we read or watch on television is negative and this can affect your mood. I often take news fast. It is embarrassing sometimes because I may not know to the minute the biggest and latest news, but I feel more grounded and happier for it. Instead of the news or the newspaper, try to read something full of positivity or encouraging. Read pages from a book you enjoy, watch videos that can help give you the inspiration you need. This positivity that you can do in just a few minutes can carry on throughout your day.

Feed Your Body: Feeding your mind is part of it, but you can’t forget about feeding your body. Make sure to give your body what it needs. Everyday, we are shown ads with messages about healthy breakfasts but most of us are opting to choose “healthy” versions of foods that are bad for us instead of selecting healthy options that are actually good for us. What we put into our bodies helps determine what we get out of them. Instead of a doughnut or frozen waffles, why not go for a vegetarian omelet or a vitamin packed protein shake?

Plan Your Day: The majority of us will start each day without a plan or even a sense of direction that our day will take so we spend it reacting to things that come up. Instead, plan and write out, what you’re looking to accomplish for the day. Not a laundry list of to-do’s but the top 3 or 4 things you want to get done that day. Writing it down will help your brain focus on the tasks for the day and increase the chance that you’ll be able to cross them all off your list. If you will just take a few minutes to plan out your day, you will see an increase in productivity – which makes us more content too.

Smile: Last, but certainly not least, this is just as simple it sounds. Smiling every morning can have a great impact on your mood because smiling will help send signals to your brain and release chemicals that will give you the feeling of happiness. Smiling helps you appreciate each day and helps get your day off on the right foot. My husband knows the value of this – he smiles all the time! He has serious smile lines that he says he has worked hard to get. Just about everyone loves to be greeted with a smile.

Hope you start to use even just a few of these. Or maybe you already do most of these but there is one or two you want to add. The benefits to your day are tremendous. By using just a few, you will notice an increase in your energy, your productivity and just feel happier! People around you will also notice a change. You’ll start to feel less stressed and more relaxed. Here’s to better mornings and more fun throughout the day because of a great start to the day!

5 Tips For Actually Working at Home!

5 tips for working from home!

As anyone who works from home knows, it can be quite difficult to stay organized while in your home office. Although there are many advantages (like avoiding rush-hour traffic or being able to go to work in your pajamas) there are some very real challenges. It can be quite strenuous to keep your home office organized and free of distractions, such as household chores, errands, TV, children,spouses and pets. Not necessarily in that order!  Here are some tips for working from home so you can stay on track!  Especially during the Holidays this can be really challenging, but on the best of days, getting done what you need to in your home based business from your home office is a feat!  I love it and I can’t imagine otherwise but it does take focus and discipline too.  I haven’t had to drive a commute for 10 years and I can tell you, I do not miss it!

1. Remove the distractions. After all, distractions are the number one reason for being unproductive while working at home. Are you tempted by all the wonderful shows you could watch on TV? Or maybe the washing machine and the dishwasher calls you?  And the kids can be a bit demanding too if they are front and center.  As much as possible, keep these distractions out of reach.  Also, I like to keep my office area clean when working from home, that way I am not distracted by the things that need to be cleaned up.  I am someone that needs some order so I often start the day just tidying up my office for a few minute so it “feels good” to me as I am working.

2. Create your own dedicated office space.  It is very difficult to stay focused and motivated if you are working in your bedroom or on the couch. It is very important that you dedicate an area in your house to being your office space. Otherwise, it will be very difficult to keep your train of thought on track if you have a number of distractions staring you in the face because you are working on the living room couch or the kitchen table. If you don’t have an actual room for your home office with a door you can shut, then carve out a real space wherever it is and put a sign up for the family that when you are in work mode, they need to wait…Easier said than done, I know but we do train people (even family) how to treat us.  It is good for your family to see you focused and accomplishing too.   The best way to mentally get yourself into work mode is to create an area that is your dedicated office or space.  Make it feel good to you.  We spend a lot of time working so enjoy your surroundings whether that is a bouquet of fresh flowers, or your favorite music in the background, create an environment that you enjoy.  Simple things really do add up.

3. Keep your office stocked and ready to go. Make sure that you have all the supplies that you need so you don’t have to stop what you are doing to go grab them. I also like to have my favorite teas and healthy snacks stocked so I have something to keep me fueled.  Now that you are ready to go, practice setting aside 2 hours a day for dedicated focus time.  It is amazing how much you can get done when you power through 2 hours of serious focused time without distractions.

4. Set office hours that you will stick to. Just because you are working from home does not mean that you should work random hours. Or work all the time which I have been known to do…If you kind of work all the time, it isn’t dedicated or as focused.  Trust me, it is more fun when you can really dedicate the time to it versus being kind of paying attention to work and the family or other distractions at the same time.  This is a tough one for me but the experts say that you should come in at a set time each day and then leave at a set time.  I am laughing as I write that because that will definitely be a new discipline for me but I am willing to try!  If you have a family, it might be a good idea to keep a sign on the door with your office hours so that everyone in the house knows that your work time is off-limits. That will also serve as a visual reminder for you to keep on working 😉

5. Stay connected! Working from home does not mean you have to be isolated. Sometimes people will say they don’t like to work from home because they feel lonely or they miss the friendly banter with people at the office.  When we work from home, we need to work harder to create that.  Coffee dates and phone calls or quick walks outside can make a big difference.  Keeping in touch with your team on a regular basis can fulfill the personal touch we all need too.  All of these things will also help you remember that you are not alone on the job and keep you motivated.   There are so many advantages to working from home.  I love it and truly can’t imagine having to work in an office anymore but if you are new to this, there are some adjustments to make.  Whether you are new or not, I hope this article gave you some food for thought.  For all of you celebrating Thanksgiving this week, happiest of times with your family.  I am grateful for all of you and our community!

How and Why to Make a Video for Your MLM Business

Videos are a great way to build a network marketing team, however, I like most of us struggle to do them! Very few of us like seeing ourselves on camera and we try to make things “perfect”.  However, sometimes you just have to push past what makes you uncomfortable and do what will reach the widest audience. After all, the field of video marketing is not going anywhere but up.  It’s necessary if you want to generate more leads in a shorter period of time. In this week’s blog, I will provide a few simple tips for generating more leads from videos. I will also show you how to make a video that is engaging and share some tools I use that make the process easier.

Why Are Videos So Important to Your Business? Videos are great for 3 main reasons.

First, they are a great way to reach new prospects. You can share benefits of your business or the product you are selling in a more personal way.  Videos uploaded directly to Facebook have very high view and engagement rates, so you are more likely to reach potential leads by sharing a great video. You can also post your videos to Youtube which is the second most used search engine in the world. Creating great content will naturally bring interested prospects.  And it is like with anything, the more you do videos, the more consistent you are, the more great content you provide – the more people will find you.  Videos more than any other tool help us to be seen as an “expert”.

Second, videos are a great way for people to get to know you. You want to ATTRACT people to you. People will get a glimpse of your personality and your enthusiasm for your business. People actually feel like they know us when they watch us on videos. This is great because you may have team members all over the world and you may not be able to do individual video chats all the time. Video allows you to share your message and energy with thousands and thousands of people.

Third, and most importantly, videos are great training tools for your team. Remember, duplication is key. Any time a tool can be reshared with a new prospect, helps them start building their business faster = more money in your wallet and theirs.  Start creating a library of videos that your team can refer and can use to train people they get to join.

I wouldn’t consider myself “tech-y”, but even I have managed to create lots of videos! I am going to walk you through my video-making process and at the end, I want you to try making your own video!

First off,  you will need a way to record yourself! I like to use my laptop. My favorite recording tool is Screenflow because it allows you to record anything happening on your computer screen, as well as the audio.  This is extremely valuable because you can record live webinars or meetings you are hosting online. You can also record right from the camera on your laptop. Screenflow is a great option for PC and Mac users, but if you have a Mac, you can also use Photo Booth. You can also use your smart phone. Use what is natural and easy for you, otherwise it will become a chore. If you do use your iPhone, I would suggest investing in a mini tripod so the video is not shaky.

Pro tip: make sure you have a well lit room! Otherwise the video will look grainy.

The best videos are conversational. It may take you a few tries, but just talk how you would to a friend you met for coffee. Write down key points you want to discuss in the video, but don’t read a full script. If you do, you will sound robotic. Your quirky personality traits really make a video shine, which almost seems counter intuitive at first. Just be yourself! If you find yourself getting nervous, just remember, it’s just a video and it won’t bite you 😉 We are often more critical of ourselves, especially our appearance, but other people are watching to hear what you have to say. They aren’t focusing on your mascara or hair cut.  Believe me, we are our own worst critics!  I have taken 10 takes to do a simple little video and then finally got to the point, where I said enough!  Good enough not perfect is good enough!

Once you have recorded your video, you can post it on Youtube or Facebook. If you want to create a more advanced video, you can add a title page and audio using a video editing program, like iMovie for Mac. You can also pay $5-$25 on Fiverr and have a professional help you add that to the video for you. If your business is well established, I would suggest adding these elements.  Here is an example below of what I mean by a title page.

By using these tips and tools, even I have created great videos. Although it was hard to get over my fear of technology and recording myself, I pushed through it and it was worth it. In the past few months, the traffic to my website has increased exponentially. Now I am challenging you! Make your first or a new video and post a link in the comments section!

  • The best thing about earning more money is the ability to inspire other people to take charge of their financial situations and become top earners! I have invested in that process over the years and I know it is a great use of my time.
  • What network marketing company should YOU work with? Do your research on the company, but also find a great team with an amazing leader. You should resonate with that leader’s style and integrity.  Your upline can make all the difference for you!
  • If you are just starting out in network marketing: it is important to laugh a lot.  And to bring your own personality into your business.  Just be you.  Don’t try to be anyone else!
  • Learn how to manifest your success! By reading and working with great masters, and consistently practicing spirituality and improving one’s skills with the laws of attraction, you can start manifesting the things you want.
  • Be consistent and always track your progress. A new person to the business needs to think of a BIG VISION and dedicate time to achieving that vision and do that every week.
  • Dedicate time to reaching out to 5 to 10 new people a day or a week (you choose) to build a network. Consistently work on this.  The speed that your business will grow ultimately depends on how many people see what you have to offer.
  • Check your ego at the door – remember: it is not about you, it’s about the team you work with.

How to Be Consistent in Five Steps

Consistency is Key

Learning how to be consistent is the best way to achieve long-term greatness in anything you do – from taking care of your health, your network marketing business or your relationships. However, learning how to be consistent is also the one thing that we humans have the most difficult time perfecting! It is most difficult when we are trying to improve something in our life. Unfortunately, we have no choice but to learn to be consistent in anything we do. In network marketing, consistency translates into making more money and creating the life you really want!

Here are just a few simple steps to learn if you want to improve an aspect in your life and become more consistent with anything you do. Set time aside for actions that will get you further in your career or your personal life. Those goals are definitely worth working on. The rewards are huge and you will never be disappointed. Here are five steps to learn how to be more consistent.

1. Remember to keep THE WHY you are trying to achieve your goals if you are going to stay connected to what you are doing. It is very important if you are going to have a clear compelling vision of what you’re trying to achieve and know why you want to. VISUALIZE the house you want, the car you wish to drive, the life you want for you and your family. This will fuel your fire. I am a big fan of dream boards.  I have a dream board for every major area of my life.  One of these days I am going to create a video showing you my dream boards that I created years ago and show you what has come true from those visions.

2. Do not make a generalized plan to “be more consistent.” It is important to pick your battles carefully. Just pick one or two things that you want to work on and stick with it. It is just a common fact that all of us have a limited capacity when it comes to will power and discipline. For example, a doctor or therapist will recommend that you don’t try to quit something like consuming sweets and drinking at the same time – otherwise you might fail at both. Instead, try to be more consistent with JUST ONE particular aspect of your life, like making more prospect phone calls. Setting specific goals will give you something to strive for. We just can’t achieve everything at once otherwise we will overwhelm ourselves.

3. It is important that you create space in your schedule to work on your goals. Stephen Covey, the highly regarded author of the best-selling “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” once said, “Don’t prioritize your schedule, schedule your priorities.” That distinction may be subtle, but it is also very important. If you are trying to make a specific activity or trait more consistent in your life, you have to build your whole life around it rather then trying to fit it in your normal daily schedule. For example, if you are trying to to build your network marketing business, it is important to set aside a few hours or more each day to do so.  None of us think we have enough time, yet we do find time for the most important things.  If you aren’t getting to something, it may be because you haven’t decided that it is really important to you.

4. You have to improve your willpower and ignore your feelings. That is, you need to ignore that voice in your head that says: “I don’t feel like it!” Anytime you are trying to be consistent at something that is important to you, you will sometimes hear that little voice. You have to train yourself to overpower that voice in your head if you want to learn how to be consistent. You just cannot be consistent without improving your willpower and remembering that you have to practice whatever it is you are trying to improve over and over again, even if you don’t feel like it. It is also important to ignore the negative voices inside your head. You know, those voices that say: “I can’t do this,” or “I can’t seem to stick with this!” or “I’m too lazy!” Just keep working on it and you will get better. Remember, that it is okay if the changes are occurring slowly – it is impossible to be perfect at everything.  One of the biggest mistakes we make in our network marketing business is not giving it enough time – both short term time and long term time.  You have to carve out the time and decide it is unconditional.

5. Most important of all: be realistic – it takes time to practice! Keep in mind that you won’t start out always being consistent 100% of the time but that’s okay. Be kind to yourself! Don’t think that if you miss one workout or one day meeting prospects, that it was a waste. It is okay to fall off the wagon time and time again – everyone does. Just don’t think that because you fell off the wagon that you can’t catch up… you just need to run and catch up to it!  What is that old saying – “It isn’t about how many times you fall down.  It is about how many times you get back up!”

MLM Secrets: How to Be a Top Earner By Changing Your Routine

The Path to Becoming a Top Earner

One of the best MLM secrets I can give to my new team members is to create a daily routine that works!  If you want to be a top earner, you must be willing to make sacrifices and change your current behaviors to make way for new ones. I like to keep an online copy of my daily routine and check items off the list as the day goes on.  I admit sometimes – I use post it notes too…

MLM Secrets: Organizing Your Routine

Whatever the start of your day is for you, make sure you can maximize the amount of time you have. I am a late night bird so it isn’t like I start my day early.  But I do make sure that I have enough time to get done what I need to do.  You have to prioritize your life.  What is most important to you?  What are you willing to give up at least for now?  The success of your routine will have a lot to do with your time management. I would suggest using a checklist of the 10 most important things you need to do on a regular basis.   Google Calendar is a great tool for setting reminders too.  You can set it up to signal alerts to your smart phone making it a piece of cake to keep track of your to do list even when you are on the go.

Start your day off right!

My daily routine includes:

Reading from an inspiring book for 15 minutes per day.  This can change your life!  Reading affirmations.  Writing in my gratitude journal.  Exercise.  Prospecting.  Following up.  Teaching new members on the team.  Creating Content.  Checking in on social media.  Responding to email and facebook messages.  Promoting the next event.  Attending team meetings/events.  And calling my Mom.

When I am focused on these activities, I am focused on what moves my business forward! Exercising may not be many people’s idea of fun, but just think of how much more you will get done. When we take good care of ourselves, we will be able to present our best selves.  If we want to be successful, we MUST be willing to do something different than what we have been doing. It is the only way to progress. Sacrificing some behaviors can help take you to the next level in your network marketing business.

Here are some other mlm secrets you can use to maximize your time:

  • Multitask! If you are driving, make some calls, or better yet, if someone else is driving, shoot off some texts and emails.  Turn your car into a network marketing university.  Use this time to learn and listen.
  • Cut down the amount of time you spend on social media for entertainment. We all know how easy it is to get lost on Facebook!  Facebook is an amazing tool but don’t get lost looking at your friend’s home-made video on how to curl your hair…
  • Delegate tasks when you can.  You do the most important things and hire/farm out the other stuff.
  • Pick the most important tasks and do those first.  You will feel great at the end of the day if you do that!

Is it important to go to your company events?

We are all busy.  I get it.  We are all moving at a very fast pace, sometimes too fast.  And sometimes we can easily justify that we can’t afford the company events that are coming up or that it just isn’t the right time to go.  And there are some life reasons that justify that thinking – but most of the stories we tell ourselves are holding us back from getting what it is we really want.  If we really want to be successful in our home based business, then we have to set ourselves up with the best possible environment.  In my 8 years of network marketing, going to the company events is one of the very, very top one or 2  things you can do in order to create that environment where you can actually win at this.  Case in point – no Diamond level Network Marketing Leader has gotten to where they are, WITHOUT going to the company events.  There are so many sayings in the home based business world that illustrate this point.

Those that show up, go up.  (those that show up at the company events)

The ones that are the best promoters win.  (best promoters of the company events)

The ones that bring the most people earn the most money.  (as in those that bring the most people to the company events)

The ones that don’t go, quit.  (as in those that don’t go to the company events)

Network Marketing Tip: Show up!

Robert Kiyosak,i in his book The Business of the 21st Century (great book by the way) talks about how the most important question to ask a prospective sponsor of a home based business is “what is your system?”.  The system is key!   In the best network marketing companies, the system consists of tools and events.  Tools and Events.  Tools and Events.  Repeat.  So if you are using the home based business system, then you are a professional pointer of the tools and you go and bring people to the events.  If you don’t go to the events, you aren’t using the system.  If you don’t go to the company events, you are making this way harder than it has to be.

It is interesting how many people resist investing in their business in our home based business industry.  I understand you want to make money. Remember, that just because it cost you somewhere between $200 to $1000 to start this business, doesn’t mean you should treat it like a $200 business.  If you had spent $100,000 to start your network marketing business and your mentor told you that it was important for you to become profitable, that you always attend the company events because you would learn how to recoup that 100k faster and become profitable more quickly, – would you go?  Would you treat that decision differently if you had invested much, much more?  I am willing to bet you would take better care of your investment.  Going to the events is  INVESTING in your home based business and just as importantly in yourself.  The personal development you will be learning by attending the events is usually worth the price of admission.  Learning from the best and the top leaders will always help you to see a bigger picture and help you to be a better business owner.

Going to the company events whether you have a team to go with you or not is absolutely critical and always a great idea.  It does take a sacrifice to leave our families, to travel and be away, to pay for it.  I’m not saying that it doesn’t.  I am just saying it is worth it and necessary.  When you don’t go, you miss out on the VERY THING that might have made the difference for you and your team.  And if you aren’t going, it is next to impossible to convince anyone on your team that they should go.

I recently traveled to Macau, China for my company’s international convention.  While we were there, we posted 4 to 5 pictures a day of the event, of us at the event, new product announcements, new incentive trip announcements, the 14,000 people crowd, and last but not least, pictures of the leaders that were there.  We brought as much of the energy and enthusiasm of the event back to the our team.  Because of the energy around this, we had several people say they would never miss another event, because they didn’t want to miss out again. We also had several people book one year early for next years international convention in Singapore.

Network Marketing Tip

The most important thing you can do AFTER a company event is to create the result you were able to achieve BECAUSE you went to the event.  The reason for that is because when the next event rolls around – you will be able to share that because you went to the last event, you advanced in rank or you learned this one tip that helped you to sponsor 20 new people.  That is what will compel people on your team to attend with you next time.  Not because you all will have a great time – which you will, but because it creates the best environment for success and here are the results to prove it!

I have heard story after story of people who weren’t succeeding but kept going to the company events (kept investing in their business) and finally something shifted and they were able to create the success they were working for.  The question in our industry is will you hang in there long enough to learn what you need to learn AND take action along the way to make it happen? Will you stay consistent in pointing to the tools and attending the company events?  How long will you stay consistent?  Are you trying this (imagine a Doctor trying medical school) or are you serious about it?

1.  Take notes.  You will have a way better chance of remembering something just because you wrote it down.  Most importantly, pull out a sheet of paper and on that sheet, write the things you will take action on.  Don’t just write a bunch of  good ideas.  Write a to do list from what you learn at the event.  And review this while you are on the plane coming home or first thing when you get back from your drive there.  Set a plan on when you are going to execute those good ideas.  You will have some lightbulb moments.  Write the action items down.

2.  Attend every session.  Show up – you didn’t go there to hang out in the hallways.  Let other people do the same thing – don’t be the one that gets other people out of the room.   Don’t be the ringleader that says let’s go to the pool or the bar.  That is for after the event.  Get what you came for.  Show up and let the leadership speak into your life.

3.  Market the company event while you are there.  Post at least 4 to 6 pictures a day of what is happening there.  And you will provoke curiosity if you don’t mention your company name.  Let people see you are up to something and let them get curious and ask you.  Telling your company name all the time is like telling the end of the movie to people who haven’t see the movie yet.  This may sound crazy to you – but trust me, not saying your company name makes you stand out!  You won’t come across like the look at me, look at me posts.  You will stand out as different and interesting!  And that is what you want.

4.  Put the Law of Attraction to work.  Write down what you want to get out of this event.  What do you want to learn, who do you want to connect with, who do you want to meet.  Get a visual image of what will happen at this company event.  If you focus on what you want ahead of time and picture it, you are much more likely to get what you want instead of randomness.

Network Marketing Tip: Are Home Parties Even Worth It?

Are Home Parties still worth it?  Still necessary?

I have 8 plus years experience in the industry and have some thoughts about this.  With the age of the internet tools we have available today and all the ways there are to connect with social media, I am hearing more and more often that home parties aren’t worth it.   Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the tools we have available on the internet and I have sponsored over 70 people in the last year from social media connections.  And I also love hosting and attending home parties.  Home parties are still a GREAT TOOL in the tool box for network marketing.

You might hear an internet marketer say you can build your network marketing business all online.  And you can, but will YOU?  Building ALL online is done successfully by very few people.  And if you talk to almost every 6 figure and 7 figure income earner that exists today, we will tell you that our success comes from a combination of offline (one and ones, home parties, events) and online (facebook, webinars, linked in…).  There are many top earners today that have achieved their success strictly through offline activities, but the world has changed and we do have these incredible online tools available and it does make sense to learn these new skills. I am just saying don’t throw a proven technique out because it seems old school.

Why are Home Parties still effective?

Is it worth it?

I believe Home Parties/Home Business Reviews are still very effective especially when you are just getting your business started and/or you want to jumpstart your business.  And this is true for most of your team too.  Social media is just a way to connect with people, often we still need to pick up the phone and talk to someone if it is someone we are really going to build a partnership with.   One of the biggest reasons people stay in their network marketing business is because of the community we create and home parties are one of the very best ways to stay in touch, to be in community and to get to know your team and prospects.  It is very hard to create online what happens at a home party.

Network Marketing Tip: How to Be a Better Sponsor

Know your Why

Do you want to be a better sponsor for your brand new person?

Here is a network marketing tip for you:  If you want to be a better sponsor, Know Your Why for building your business and help your brand new person to know their why for building their business. It seems so simple but there is more to this than you would think at first glance. If you add this one thing, you will build a stronger, happier and bigger team.

In the network marketing profession, we talk a lot about the need to know your why.  We ask our brand new person (or we should be asking) “Why do you want to do this business?”  And we often hear “your why needs to make you cry”.  (I don’t think my why has ever made me cry – but it does move me into action.)  If you want to be a better sponsor, you need to help your brand new person to see that their why needs to be big enough so it will get them up out of that comfy chair and into action.  This is a really important question to ask your newly sponsored person.

When I first got into the industry in 2006, I remember feeling awkward about asking someone what their why was and to share with me their dreams.  It seemed too personal.  Remember, I come from a big American corporate background – we never did anything like that!  So I didn’t do this first step for the first year.   And then I realized that if I wanted to be a better sponsor to the people that I was bringing into the business, that I might want to include what I was being taught as being the first step.  And when I finally got the nerve up to start asking people about their why, I was amazed at how powerful it was.  People that I had known for years started sharing with me things I had never known that they wanted to do.  Molly wants to build a meditation retreat center and Sue wants to create movies about kids that have overcome hardships.  I had no idea until I asked the question.

Network Marketing Tip:  Help people to understand that to know your why for building this business is key.

When I started asking people what their why was, the conversation around this question really helped to create a bond between  my brand new teammate and me – even when it was someone I had known for years. But the key to asking your newly sponsored person about their why is to keep asking the question.  Everyone will say when asked “tell me your why for building this business”:  “because I want more money”, “because I want to get out of debt”, or “because I want financial freedom”.  And those are great goals.  But the money all by itself isn’t enough.  Trust me on this, it isn’t enough!

Know your Why to build a Network Marketing Business

When somebody says they want to pay off their bills and that is why they are coming into business with you, if you want to be a better sponsor, you need to ask them to think bigger.

So keep asking questions.  Network Marketing Tip:  Leaders ask questions.  Follow up with these questions:  What are you going to do with the money?  Why would financial freedom be important?  What does it look like?  Where do you live?  What does your house look like?  Who is with you?  What car do you drive?  Where do you travel to?  How do you travel?  Are there causes that you want to give to?  What are you going to do for you, your family and friends that is different?

If you want to be a better sponsor, keep asking questions….

When to Use 3 Way Calls in Network Marketing

Most people don’t have these answers right away, but given a few minutes, they will come up with the real reasons and their real why to build a home based business.  The reason why we don’t have the answers right away, is nobody in our traditional business life or even personal life, asks us this!  And that is exactly why it is so powerful.  By asking your brand new person this you are helping them to visualize what success would actually look like for them.  That is much more powerful than a blanket “I want financial freedom.”  You are helping them to figure out where they are going and to FEEL what that would feel like.  You are helping to anchor that feeling so when the ups and downs happen, they can tap into that feeling to remind themselves why they are building a network marketing business.  And if you want to be a better sponsor, you will remind them of that feeling too when the ups and downs inevitably happen.

This conversation between two people is actually a wonderful experience for both of you!

Network Marketing Tip:  Is it important to meet Industry Leaders?

The short answer is yes. Absolutely.  Success really does leave clues.  And if you want what successful people have – the easiest way for you to get there is to follow in the footsteps of people who have already been there.  My life is absolutely different and better today because of mentors AKA Industry Leaders.  Mentors will help you in ways you can’t even imagine today.  Real leaders have a heart space to help other people become successful too!

Here is a network marketing tip and example for you of what I am talking about.  I just returned home from the Top Earner Academy event with Ray and Jessica Higdon, two rock stars in the network marketing training space. I had the great pleasure of meeting Lisa Grossmann and Curtis Broome while I was there. Lisa and Curtis have been in the network marketing industry for about 25 years and hugely successful in building great businesses all over the world AND consult with many network marketing companies on how to be well, just better.  Do you think they might be able to teach us a few things?  Do you think they are true leaders in our industry?

I loved hearing Lisa speak at the Top Earner Academy event and knew that I wanted to meet her and get a chance to talk with her before the event was over. I was surprised (and elated) when Lisa came up to me after I spoke on the Success Panel and said “I am so glad I get to meet you. I have been following you for a long time.” I thought – “really, me?”.   (Do you recognize that little voice inside all of us that questions if we really have something worthwhile to offer? Ignore it.  Tell it to be quiet and go away.) Needless to say, I was very happy that she did come up to me!  Because even though we hadn’t met, I knew Lisa was one of the top leaders in our industry!

Take advantage of the opportunities before you and talk to the Leaders in the room!

After the session that day, I was so tired and really just wanted to head back to my room and was doing so, when I heard my higher self say, “you need to go back and find Lisa and Curtis and see if they want to go to dinner tonight or meet for breakfast tomorrow. You have been given this opportunity for a reason.” So I made myself walk back, found Lisa and asked her. And I did indeed get to spend several hours talking with Lisa and Curtis that night. You know when you make a connection with someone and you just know it will be an important relationship in your life? Well, that is how I felt.

The moral to the story is:  first, put yourself in situations where you can meet industry leaders and potential mentors and when you do put yourself in situations where you have the opportunity to reach up and meet someone  – say an Industry Leader, that you really admire and want to get to know, then let them know that. Take advantage of the situation you put yourself in. Create the situations where that is possible. Recognize who are the potential agents for good (friends/mentors/trusted advisors/industry leaders) in your life and seek them out. Don’t give in to “I’m tired” or “they won’t want to talk to me” or “maybe another time”. No, right now is the time that you have been offered to meet that person.  It is good to reach up!

Force yourself to walk back and put yourself smack into the situations and connections and friendships that can make a difference for you. It might be a successful business owner you know that is just looking for a new business. It might be a teacher or a mentor that you meet at an event. It might be the organizer of a networking event you just attended. The best way to create success is to surround yourself with people who have done what you want to do. Those opportunities happen more often than we realize – don’t ignore them or cave into the little voice that holds us back. I am so glad I didn’t the other night!

Overall, the top earner academy was a huge success and a great learning experience.
